Jaap Scheeren en Hans Gremmen
Fake Flowers in Full Colour

20 juni – 30 september 2008, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

THIS IS NOT A BOOK

Van links naar rechts: Johan Thermaenius (ontwerper), Ringel Goslinga (auteur), Sebastiaan Hanekroot (drukker), Roger Willems (ontwerper). Op de foto met 'This is not a book'.

Tekst uit 'This is not a book' over 'Family Tree':

Text from 'This is not a Book' about 'Family Tree':

EN The subject of this book is intriguing. Contrary to what you might expect, it does not trace Goslinga’s family tree. Instead, it gives us 108 photographs of people who have been important to him. Some have to do with a particular period in his life or with his divorced parents, others he regards as important for his person, for Ringel Goslinga as he now is. This interpersonal approach gives the images something impalpable, something poetic...
The book derives its strength from the photos and the way they have been put together. There is enough room between the four sections into which the material has been divided. Black fields mark the place of people who were unavailable for the photographer. The whole project is a form of self-exploration. Goslinga links people through photos, and the result is a self-portrait. The whole thing has been brilliantly printed in tritone and very nicely sewn and bound.

THE BEST DESIGNED BOOKS AT THE STEDELIJK MUSEUM

The Best Designed Books 2007

27.06.08 - 30.09.08
Every year, the Dutch Best Designed Books Foundation (Stichting De Best Verzorgde Boeken) presents the best designed books of the past year at the Stedelijk Museum. This year 33 books have been selected out of all those published in the Netherlands in 2007.

Each year, a jury of five professionals selects books that stand out in terms of design and production technique. In the course of 2007, Dutch publishers, commissioning bodies, designers and printers together submitted a total of 465 books – an unprecedented number. The jury, consisting of Kees van den Hoek (Uitgeverij THOTH, Bussum), Ben Laloua (designers Ben Laloua/Didier Pascal, Rotterdam), Pieter Tielen (Drukkerij Tielen, Boxtel), Julius Vermeulen (adviser on Art and Design to Koninklijke TNT Post, The Hague) and René van der Vooren (designer, Amsterdam), whittled these down to the 33 books shortlisted as the Best Designed Books of 2007.

The selection includes the impressive monograph Eva Besnyö (Uitgeverij Voetnoot), designed by Barends & Pijnappel, and Ringel Goslinga. Family Tree (Veenman Publishers), designed by Johan Thermaenius and Roger Willems. Irma Boom, two of whose publications won international medals as well as local acclaim last year, is among this year’s Dutch award-winners with two more books: Inside Outside. Petra Blaisse (NAi Publishers) and Sur place (Fortis Stichting Kunst en Historisch Bezit).

This year’s Best Designed Books exhibition will travel to other venues in the Netherlands and abroad. It is once again accompanied by a catalogue published by the Best Designed Books Foundation and containing a jury report on all the books selected.
